For this Mercer On Mission program, Mercerians travel to Tanzania to work with elementary, secondary and college students in partnership with Village Schools Tanzania. They will collaborate with Tanzanian teachers to incorporate teaching strategies to positively impact rural schools throughout Tanzania.
Many young people in Tanzania do not have access to a quality education. The merit-based education system limits rural students’ opportunity to advance beyond elementary levels. Mercer’s work helps to address this need. In partnership with Village Schools Tanzania, the program will work to help train teachers and implement differentiation strategies. This project will provide the opportunity to work directly in schools to improve teacher efficacy and student engagement.
In partnership with Village Schools Tanzania, Mercer students will work collaboratively with Tanzanian teachers to enhance teaching strategies and develop culturally appropriate teaching tools and activities. Students and faculty will work with teachers to help prepare them to work in rural and under-resourced schools.
By respecting and integrating local traditions, values and educational needs, the partnership will aim at sharing expertise, planning and disseminating materials, and, consequently, empowering both Mercer students and Village Schools Tanzania teachers.
Our program will foster collaboration between Mercer and Tanzanian teachers, encouraging them to share ideas and strategies that can be applied in their respective classrooms. Mercerians will also live, teach, work and learn with students in local communities. Mercer students and the Village Schools Tanzania teachers will seek to provide sustainable solutions that enhance the quality of education, fostering a future where all children, regardless of their background, have access to relevant and meaningful learning experiences and materials.
I went on the Mercer On Mission trip to Tanzania while getting my master’s for teaching. The experience was unforgettable and unique. I was both a teacher and a student during my experience. The students I taught were so respectful and kind, and the people I met along the way were extremely welcoming. I was able to grow in my career and my education, and I felt like I was making a positive impact. I feel so lucky to have been able to make connections that will last a lifetime and memories I will never forget.
Students are required to sign up for six hours of credit. The registrar will enroll you in courses for your program, including one class from each of the program's faculty.
