GENERAL INFO:
The Mercer On Mission program in Peru provides students with an international service-learning experience focused on STEM education, robotics, programming, virtual reality and hands-on engineering activities. Students will work with children and youth in Lima through partnerships with SOS Children’s Villages and local university partners, using engaging STEM activities to build problem-solving, teamwork, creativity and technical skills.

Meeting a Need

The program addresses the need for accessible, engaging STEM education among underserved children and youth in Peru. Through hands-on robotics, engineering and programming activities, Mercer students will help provide opportunities for young people to develop technical and problem-solving skills while building confidence, teamwork, and interest in STEM careers.

What You'll Do

Students will prepare on campus through coursework, hands-on robotics training, lesson planning and cultural study. In Peru, students will teach STEM concepts through robotics, programming, engineering challenges and team competitions. They will work directly with children at SOS Children’s Villages and other community partners, adapting activities to different ages and learning levels. Students will gain experience in teaching, mentoring, cross-cultural communication, teamwork and applying engineering skills to a real community need.

My time in Peru with Mercer On Mission challenged me to grow both personally and academically. Teaching robotics and virtual reality to local children let me share my passion for technology while learning to communicate, adapt and connect across cultures. Stepping outside my comfort zone made me more confident and adaptable. I came home with new skills, meaningful connections and a perspective that will continue to shape me.

Academic Courses

Students are required to sign up for six hours of credit. The registrar will enroll you in courses for your program, including one class from each of the program's faculty.
