Greece

TRAVEL DATES:
May 24 – June 15, 2025
GENERAL INFO:
This year, the Mercer On Mission project in Greece will focus on advocacy efforts on behalf of and by the Roma. We will work with the Roma nonprofit, Romani Hope, to assess methods of advocacy communication for the Roma and help them produce various media-based solutions to the challenge of general discrimination against and misunderstanding about the Roma.

Meeting a Need

The Roma population of Greece experiences poverty, lack of education, unmet health needs and general discrimination. In the past, we have addressed educational and health needs. This year, we will focus on advocacy for the Roma to improve their acceptance by and integration into the larger Greek society.

What You'll Do

Mercer students will explore various communications media and design a program for positive presentation of the Roma to the larger society. This will involve interviews with Roma and development of videos.

Emily Bacallao

Being a part of this Mercer On Mission experience has shaped me in greater ways than I ever would have expected. This was my first time out of the country, and being immersed in Greek and Roma culture helped to expand my worldview and gave me a greater appreciation for other cultures.
