Students will assist with the production of qualitative data on water use and the impact of shortages on rural residents of Uttarakhand that the organization is unable to collect on their own. In addition, Mercer students will work with local students at the organization's primary school to improve their English language skills.
In Macon, students will learn about the connections between colonialism, development and the current climate crisis, the effects of which they will observe firsthand in India. Students will develop skills in designing and analyzing interviews in the classroom before assisting with interviews of people experiencing water shortages in rural Uttarakhand. Students will also visit important cultural sites in Delhi before travelling to the Himalayan foothills to observe a development organization at work and contribute to its projects.
We talk about the functions of NGOs and how they stay relevant, but seeing one in action was like seeing a very well-oiled machine. There are so many moving parts and components that go on behind the scenes that I was aware of but had never really seen in action.
Students are required to sign up for six hours of credit. The registrar will enroll you in courses for your program, including one class from each of the program's faculty.
