TRAVEL DATES:
Mid-May to early June, 2027
GENERAL INFO:
Mercer On Mission in Izúcar de Matamoros, Mexico, partners with the Universidad Tecnológica de Izúcar de Matamoros (UTIM) to address gaps in public education and agricultural resources. Students will engage in English language workshops for UTIM undergraduates, lead a STEAM summer camp for middle school students, and collaborate on engineering projects aimed at supporting sustainable agriculture, such as the development of a temporary immersion bioreactor.

Meeting a Need

This program addresses two needs in the Izúcar community: enhancing English language education and promoting innovative and sustainable agricultural practices. By providing English instruction, interactive STEAM learning and agrarian research collaboration, Mercer students will help expand educational opportunities and provide long-term resources for the region.

What You'll Do

Mercer students will engage in service-learning while developing global citizenship, language proficiency and professional skills. The program provides an immersive experience to live and serve in Mexico, making a meaningful impact through education and research. Students will prepare through coursework and cultural orientation before departure. In Mexico they will:

  • Teach English to UTIM students
  • Lead project-based STEAM activities for middle schoolers
  • Collaborate with UTIM faculty and peers to help develop sustainable agricultural practices

Along the way, students will develop and strengthen their cross-cultural communication, teaching, research and language skills.
