Not all K-12 students in Bogota, Colombia, have the opportunity to receive English language and/or technology lessons. This Mercer On Mission program will address this lack of resources and support in the public education system by providing technology and English language workshops to K-12 students in one of the underprivileged neighborhoods in the capital city.
Students participating in this Mercer On Mission program will be able to prepare and run English language and technology workshops for K-12 Colombian students. Participants will acquire new skills in real social contexts, expand their vision of the world, learn about the reality of the education system in Colombia and, most importantly, make a lasting impact on the lives of the students and faculty of Gimnasio Colombo Andino. Students do not need to speak Spanish to be able to participate in this program.
My experience in Colombia showed me that even with little to no Spanish, connection and impact are still possible. Language was not a barrier but a bridge for cultural growth and learning, and seeing my students light up with pride as they made progress in English reminded me never to take my education for granted and truly captured what makes Mercer On Mission so transformative.
Students are required to sign up for six hours of credit. The registrar will enroll you in courses for your program, including one class from each of the program's faculty.
