In Puerto Rico, 8.6% of residents are without health care coverage, and the homeless population is estimated at 3,750 people in a single night, according to a 2020 U.S. Census Bureau report. Additionally, the ongoing economic crisis and impact of hurricanes have contributed to an increase in homelessness in this U.S. territory.
Mercer’s work in Puerto Rico aims to help bridge the gap in health services and education, while advocating for health care policy changes.
Mercer faculty and students will offer health services to disadvantaged individuals, families and communities in the San Juan area. With assistance from Mercer telehealth services, they will diagnose and treat community members and refer them to local clinics as needed.
The Mercerians will provide “street medicine” for homeless individuals in partnership with a Puerto Rican government-sponsored program and work with adults suffering from addiction through a collaboration with an adult rehabilitation center. They will also advocate for health care policy changes and improved delivery care models.
Participants will also learn about Puerto Rican culture during sightseeing excursions.
