Program Highlights

Service Project Description:

MOM México aims to teach in a summer camp type of setting to the children and college students of Izúcar de Matamoros in the region of Puebla, México. The goal is to address the lack of resources in the public education system and to support the degrees in Agriculture at Universidad Tecnológica de Izúcar de Matamoros (UTIM) by implementation three educational projects:  

 

(1.)   STEAM Summer Camp for middle school students. Students will improve their English language skills while learning through the implementation of project-based learning across science, technology, engineering, art, and math.   

 

(2.) English Workshops for undergraduate English and agriculture major students of Universidad Tecnológica de Izúcar de Matamoros (UTIM) to help them develop their English speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills. Additionally, students from UTIM will participate as teaching assistants to Mercer students during the summer camp.      

  

(3.) A partnership between Mercer University and UTIM to create educational and scientific programs in both universities with a focus on mechanobiology of plant cells.    

  

We will have several days of sightseeing for cultural excursion before starting our service project and/or during weekends.   

 

Tentative Travel Dates 

Travel dates are May 30 through June 24 or 25, 2023.
